1000 animals end up at the Society of the Prevention of Cruelty
to Animals (SPCA) every month and only 10% find homes eventually.
The 10% that makes it to the ‘adoption’ list would have
been considered under the following criteria: age, temperament, health
and availability of space within the Pound. Only then would they be
kept at the Pound until they find good homes.
The rest do not survive.
The SPCA here can never be a ‘no kill’ organisation while
there is such a large surplus of animals. As long as SPCA continues
to be the only shelter in Singapore that takes in unlimited numbers
of unwanted pets and strays, the ‘no kill’ utopia can only
be a dream.
While people find it extremely easy to buy a pet from a pet store,
they forget the large amount of responsibility that comes with keeping
a pet. More often than not, most people buy pets because they look cute
when young. However, when the pet grows up, their owners decide that
the pet is too big, thus end up giving the pets away, or in worse scenarios,
abandoning them.
In the case of abandoned pets, if not sterilised, they would inevitably
end up mating with other strays and thus quickly multiply.
Let us save the animals. Do your research before buying a pet. And
if possible, ADOPT.
